As a parent of a child that is in school, I am well aware of how easy it is for my kid to come back home with a bunch of unwelcome guests…Yes, I am referring to head lice.

These tiny insects that can live on the scalp of their human host. If you have never had the unwelcomed pleasure to come across these blood-sucking critters, let me just tell you that they have six legs, with a curved claw that can tightly hold onto hair.

Head lice can crawl easily and as a matter of fact, they are quite fast when on the head and while they crawl between hairs, they cannot fly or jump as many people believe.

Head lice feed on human blood exclusively, so they do not live on pets or any other animal. A louse (singular for lice), uses its needle-like mouthparts to suck blood through the skin (gross).

They can reproduce very quickly through their nits which are the lice eggs and they look like tiny dots that can be yellow, tan, or brown before they hatch into lice.

The lice will lay the eggs ( nits), on the hair shafts, close to the scalp as that is where the temperature is perfect for keeping them warm until they hatch.

The head lice glue the nit to the hair, so they cannot be shaken off and it takes a lot of work to get rid of them!

Head lice treatment and removal can be costly and expensive, so the best that you can do is try to prevent a head lice infestation at home, especially because they can easily spread from person to person and once they make it to your home, they can be really hard to get rid of.
