I have reviewed a few different products from Seagate like the FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra Portable Drive which is one of the new External Hard Drives from from the GoFlex for Mac External Portable Hard Drives . This hard drive is formatted, for Time Machine (Time Machine creates incremental backups of files that can be restored at a later date It allows the user to restore the whole system, multiple files, or a single file. And the Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drives which is a combination between flash and magnetic storage known as a solid state hybrid drive (SSHD).

The hybrid hard drive concept takes a standard spindle hard drive and adds flash memory and pattern recognizing software to improve the drive’s performance with repetitive tasks……All of them great products….The FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra Portable Drive is definitely a big favorite for its portability and great asset for you when you are one the go.

From the moment we decided to go on the Ohio trip, one of my main goals was to keep the little bug entertained….As I mentioned on another opportunity, a long car ride with an unhappy kid can make the trip ten times longer! The GoFlex Satellite™ device is a network attached storage (NAS) device with a difference…. It allows you to take your media library on-the-go and stream it wirelessly to your iPad®, Android® tablets, PC, and smartphones thanks to its built-in battery and Wi-Fi hotspot.

With the capability to store over 300 movies, the Seagate GoFlex Satellite allows up to three devices to play the same video file at once and as you can see this is definitely something to use during our Ohio trip. The setup for us was a bit tricky ….We had to download an app ( I highly recommend you read the instructions before starting the set, I also recommend to watch the video that is available when you install the software in your computer).

The unit works with a Lithium Ion battery that let you use your device while on the go. If you have an iPad , the Seagate GoFlex Satellite is a perfect solution as you can copy media files onto the Satellite over its USB3 connection in two different ways, you can either drag and drop or you can use the synchronization utility. The battery is also charged over USB, with a second 5V-to-USB cable and a wall adapter, so the unit is completely portable.

The device name is “GoFlex Satellite 5L7” … however, if you use the program by GoFlex with the iTunes account, it expects to use “GoFlex Satellite” … I was not able to get this program with Itunes to work properly on my iPad, however, by simply going to any web page while connected to this wifi connection, you will come to www.goflexsatellite.com/ and from there – you can access the HD in its entirety and watch video’s, pictures, or any other thing you want to do with your wireless hard drive….In simple words, once you have your unit set up all you need to do to launch it, is to type any web address and the browser will take you to the Satellite site: www.goflexsatellite.com/ of your personal hard drive.

To add the different devices, change your WIFI setting on which ever device you want to add to the Satellite network and again, just type any webaddress! Also, please note that once connected, you can change the settings of the drive such as the WIFI name or password protect the WIFI connection of your portable hard drive.

The GoFlex Satellite supports different file types: For iPad: Video: H.264 video, MPEG-4, Motion-JPEG. Audio: AAC, MP3, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV Documents: Microsoft® Office®, iWork®, Adobe® Acrobat® (PDF) Select types supported by 3rd-party apps For Laptop, Tablet and Smartphone: Plays any file supported by your device apps. The GoFlex Satellite is certainly a great way to carry many files, videos, pictures and even documents in a very compact unit….This is certainly one of my favorite products from Seagate! The retail price on the GoFlex Satellite is 199.99.
