The minute I knew I was pregnant with the ladybug, I knew I was going to breastfeed her and if there was any doubt, that was gone when I saw a poster in the hospital maternity ward talking about the benefits for both mom and baby when being breastfed……I wanted to include just few of the many benefits on this review:
Benefits for the kids:
a. Dental Health
Among breastfed infants, the longer the duration of nursing, the lower the incidents of malocclusion.
Source: Labbok, M.H. “Does Breast Feeding Protect against Malocclusion? An Analysis of the 1981 Child Health Supplement to the National Health Interview Survey”. American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 1987.
b. Toddler Health
Mothers of 67 infants were questioned about the types and duration of illness episodes requiring medical care between 16 and 30 months of age. Breastfeeding was noted to decrease the number of infant illnesses and indirectly improve toddler health.
Source: Gulick, E.E. “The Effects of Breastfeeding on the Toddler Health. “Pediatric Nursing, 1986.
c. Diabetes Mellitus
Children who developed IDDM in New South Wales, Australia were matched with healthy children (ratio 1:2) of the same sex and age for comparison. Those who were exclusively breastfed during their first three months of life had a 34% lower risk of developing diabetes than those who were not breastfed. Children given cow’s milk-based formula in their first three months were 52% more likely to develop IDDM than those not given cow’s milk formula.
Source: Diabetes Care 1994;17:1381-1389, 1488-1490.
Benefits for moms:
1. Delays Fertility
Women who nurse frequently during exclusive breastfeeding remained amenorrhoeic longer than infrequent nursers, introduced supplements later and did not resume menses as promptly thereafter. Duration of exclusive nursing and night nursing after supplementation were the major influences on amenorrhoea.
Source: Elias,M.F. “Nursing Practices and Lactation Amenorrhoea.” Journal of Biosco Sci, 1968.
2. Breast Cancer
Among both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, risk of breast cancer decrease with increasing duration of lifetime lactation experience although the effect was consistently stronger for premenopausal women.
Source: McTieman, A., Evidence of Protective Effect of Lactation on Risk of Breast Cancer in Young Women.” American Journal of Epidemiology, 1986.
3. Uterine Cancer
A protective effect against uterine cancer was found for women who breastfeed.
Source: Brock, K.E., “Sexual, Reproductive, and Contraceptive Risk Factors for Carcinoma-in-Situ of the Uterine Cervix in Sidney. “Medical Journal of Australia, 1989.
4. Ovarian Cancer
Breastfeeding should be added to the list of factors that decrease ovulatory age and thereby decrease the risk of ovarian cancer.
Source: Schneider, A.P. “Risk Factor for Ovarian Cancer. “New England Journal of Medicine, 1987.
So obviously breastfeeding was really a no brainer for me and I loved the bond it created between me and the ladybug. For that fact alone I would not trade it for anything in the world. The one thing that was hard was that if the ladybug slept a little longer than what I was expecting, my breast would get really full and that was painful so after a couple of days of that DH and I started to look for the best options for breast pumps out there and we agreed that Medela was the way to go. We decided upon the Swing™ Breastpump which I believe is Medela’s smallest, lightest single electric pump and it worked like a charm but I knew that I probably would go with a bigger and more powerful model the second time around.
Pump In Style® Advanced The Shoulder Bag™ is a daily use breast pump designed for moms who pump several times a day so I knew this would be a great upgrade for me …Even though I stay at home, I like to store the milk for the times that a bottle is more convenient.
Medela’s Pump in Style Shoulder Bag is what I consider a great upgrade from an already great pump( the Swing) and a breast pump should be among the first things on your shopping list if you are planning to breastfeed…..It was not on mine when I had the ladybug but it is on the top of the list, right next to a good car sear the second time around!
The Medela Pump in Style Shoulder Bag features a smart and powerful pumping action that is proven to mimic a baby’s natural nursing pattern and gets more milk in less time and it also makes it less uncomfortable ( I am all about pain free and comfort when ever is possible)!
The technology used in these pumps was first researched and developed for hospital-grade breast pumps, and luckily for moms all over the world this technology is now available for personal-use pumps ( thanks Medela).
The Medela Pump in Style Shoulder Bag consists of two phases, the stimulation phase with fast and light sucking to start milk flowing and expression phase, slower sucking with more vacuum to express more milk gently and efficiently. It features customized pumping with adjustable speed and vacuum control. The One-touch ‘let-down’ button is designed for faster milk flow. The whole process is really easy to follow and get used to.
The in Style Shoulder Bag is a double pump which makes pumping time shorter and easier and Medela also offers Medela Easy Expression Bustier which makes the pumping process hands free!
The pump comes with everything you will need while on the go and having a separate bag for your pump and feeding elements is just a smart way to do it….The pump elements are very easy to sanitize and to make everything even better, Medela has one of the BEST customer service departments I had ever had the chance to deal with ( I had a little issue with my swing , I needed a bigger shield, but I had no idea what the problem was). Medela’s customer service walked me through all the process until we figured out what was the problem and they sent me the replacement at no charge!
The Medela Pump in Style Shoulder Bag (57027) retails for 265.00 at the Medela website. I am sure you can find more inexpensive pumps and I am always up for saving some money, but this is one product I will not take my chances with and will not go with a different brand because they are a few dollars cheaper. This is a great pump and worth every penny!
Features:
• Double-Electric Breast Pump
• 2-Phase Expression® Technology for Smart & Powerful Pumping
• Simulation Mode & Expression Mode
• Customized Pumping w/ Adjustable Speed & Vacuum Control
• One-Touch ‘Let-Down’ Button for Faster Milk Flow

Breastfeeding tip# 1 – Do what you want to do, I was the first in my family to breastfed since my mom breastfed me 20 years prior and since she lived out of state by then I received little support from my family. They tried convincing me how much easier bottles were, but I kept going, because after all it’s my baby and mother knows best for her babies. 🙂
Thanks mommy saves at yahoo dot com
Breastfeeding tip #2 – Drink LOTS of water, it really does help. I still drank other things, like juice and milk, but I always tried drinking an equal amount of water with it. I found that when I felt my milk was “running low” that drinking some water would help.

mandatory entry: I like Medela on fb, I’m a public follower and I would get the car charger for their pumps. Unfortunately, I am positive I will end up pumping in my car upon my return to work after DD #2 is born. I also learned about Fenugreek to increase milk supply and I wish I had known that when DD #1 weaned (or had a nursing strike) at 5 months. Because of that and other health issues I had at the time, my supply dramatically decreased almost overnight. Bound and determined to get to at least 6 months with this next one!

As a tip, I would recommend going to a breastfeeding class WITH your partner prior to giving birth. I felt very prepared and DH and I were both amazed to learn how much effort it can take, especially in those early months. He was definitely supportive and that helped a lot.
blondredhead at mac dot com
As another tip, I would say to finish up the morning nursing with a pump afterwards to make sure you get as much as possible and continue production. I also like what another poster mentioned about pumping on one side while nursing on the other, but I always preferred to nurse on both sides with DD.

I learned that even before having a baby, it’s important to learn all you can about nursing and to find a lactation consultant
They have lots of products, but I’d be interested to try their hydrogel pads!
