I always liked the outdoors even though I am not a really good outdoors person, certainly not as good as my aunt Betsy……She is like my hero when it comes to outdoor adventures, she rides a bike, and I mean 10 mile rides through the woods, hikes, camp……You mention it, she is also a bird watcher and one of the most energetic persons I have ever met!
I am dying to go camping with her, we did a small nature walk when I went to visit her home in Ohio last Christmas, so I am really looking forward to a real camping experience with the aunt Bets……The other day I found an online store called Mountain Hardwear and I immediately thought of aunt Betsy and her active life style , I contacted them to see if they would let me review some of their products and have aunt Betsy to be the one to test their products and they agreed!
In 1993 their brand was founded by a group of passionate people, who on a shoe-string, believed anything is possible, and that anything worth pursuing in life required challenge. In the first 16 years, their brand has been focused on the literal mountain. Climbing to the highest peaks in the world, humbling standing on their summits and celebrating the possibilities realized from pursuing dreams with relentless passion and focus.
I am not an expert on this kind of clothing (therefore the reason why I asked aunt Betsy to test them for me), but their catalog looked really good, even for someone like me that is not used to this kind of clothing. As I usually do when reviewing something that is not in my field of expertise I look for a more experienced opinion.
We had the chance to try two different products from the Mountain Hardwear catalog, the Typhoon Jacket which is designed with rich detail, and a lightweight backcountry shell to keep you dry in a torrential downpour. This jacket is fully waterproof and extremely breathable.
This is what aunt Betsy thinks about the Typhoon Jacket:. First let me say that it is beautiful, with vibrant colors (I have the two toned blue) and streamlined to look very feminine. It is gore-tex and as this is such a quality product, I know it will last a lifetime. It has zippers for air vents under the arms and the sides of the chest. Perfect for when you are hiking. The hood can roll down and Velcro at the collar. The hood also has a wide brim that allows you to see but also keep the rain off of your face. It also has a toggle stretch cord on the hood to sculpt it around your head. It also has the toggle stretch cord around the bottom of the coat to snug it at the bottom. Two nice big cargo pockets with zippers also at a well designed position for comfortably placing your hands in. It has zipper and Velcro closures up the front and Velcro adjustments at the wrist. This is just a well designed rainy, windy weather coat. Even though it has all these wonderful features, I like it because it looks feminine and not like a big poncho. It is suitable to wear just about anywhere!
Typhoon features:
• Attached, rollaway hood with extra-beefy brim for added protection against the elements
• Pit zips and mesh front pockets for ventilation
• Adjustable Velcro® cuffs for quick fit adjustments
• Dual hem drawcords seal in warmth
• Micro-Chamois™-lined chin guard prevents zipper chafe

The second product she had the chance to try was the Mesa Pant. Made from sturdy nylon canvas, the Mesa has a full-length inseam gusset and articulated knees for full range of motion and a micro-chamois lined seamless conical waist for comfort under a pack

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the pants. To begin with, they fit me perfectly. Exactly the right length. Of course, the temperature has been in the nineties and this time of year I don’t usually wear pants. So the first thing I did was to unzip them at the thigh and they became my new favorite pair of shorts! They are wonderful because they are thin, so they are cool yet very wind resistant as they are made of nylon. They do not wrinkle. Nothing seem to stick to them…I always hate those materials that all the fuzzies get on and stay. And they don’t seem to get dirty, everything just brushes off of them. I have been wearing them daily to see what torture tests I can put them through and they have passed everything like hiking in dense woods, sitting and climbing on rocks, yoga exercises and bike riding. They are comfortable for everything. I love the deep pockets too. I also like the fact that it is a quiet material. No one hears you coming when you walk. The adjustable clip belt at the snap is comfortable and quick to release when “ya gotta go”. I plan to buy more pants in different colors. I think they will last me a long time and they wash and wear wonderfully. It is so nice to have quality products to buy that you know you are getting your money’s worth.

Mesa Pant features:
• Micro-Chamois-lined seamless conical waist for comfort under a pack
• Integrated webbing belt with buckle closure for easy fit adjustments
• Lots of pockets for storage
• Mesh drain panels in pockets for river crossings and spontaneous swims
• Full-length inseam gusset and articulated knees for mobility
• Adjustable drawcord hidden inside hem to cinch pant leg
• DWR finish sheds moisture
• UPF 50 sun protection
