Aestheticians know quite a lot about beauty, so it pays to listen to them when they speak or provide advice. After all, when it comes to matters relating to beauty, it is all too easy to make mistakes.

The good news is that we’ve taken all their advice and distilled it into a single post of things they recommend you never do.

Leave Makeup On When You Go To Sleep

Leaving makeup on when you go to sleep is tempting if you’ve had a long day at work, but it could be a disaster for your skin. Sleeping with it covering your pores can trap dirt, cause breakouts, and lead to faster aging.

Therefore, always take it off at night with cotton pads and some cleanser. It only takes a minute.

Use Expired Skin Care Products

Another big no-no is using expired skin care products. These often contain natural ingredients which (like most things) have a use-by date. The last thing you want is to slather your skin in oxidized chemicals that lead to further inflammation and damage.

Therefore, always check the label on your products to ensure everything is in date. Pay special attention to ingredients, like vitamin C, known to oxidize and go bad quickly.

Expect Overnight Miracles

Aestheticians also recommend against overnight miracles. If someone is telling you that they woke up one morning looking 20 years younger, they’re probably exaggerating.

For example, if you go for fillers, like Juvederm, choose professionals to administer them. Don’t try to do it yourself or use anything that isn’t an official product.

Also, don’t put anything on your skin known to be dangerous, like heavy metals or garlic. You could wind up with burns or worse.

Use Dirty Makeup Brushes

You also want to be careful to avoid using dirty makeup implements, like brushes. If your makeup products are high-quality, they may contain natural compounds, which can attract microbes. And even if you are using fully synthetic options, brushes can still get dirty from the skin itself.

Fortunately, washing them is fairly easy and you don’t need to do much. You should also replace them every three months or so as a precaution, just in case you have colonies of bacteria living inside the brushes.

Pick At Pimples

Picking at pimples is another big no-no, no matter how tempting it might be. Squeezing spots and digging out blackheads often seems like a good idea at the time, but it usually leads to scarring.

Therefore, take it easy with pimples and allow them to fade naturally. The body is good at getting rid of them; it just takes time.

Overusing Retinols

Finally, aestheticians recommend against overusing retinols, something that’s easy to do if you want quick results. Retinols are powerful ingredients, and the skin can only tolerate so much of them.

Therefore, start light and build up from there. Usually, a pea-sized amount of product is sufficient for the entire face. More than that can irritate, especially when applied to thinner areas of skin.
