Moving house is a big enough deal as it is, without the stress of making mistakes on top of it. As a human being, you are likely to make mistakes in all walks of life. They are typically a positive learning experience. However, moving house can be a stressful and overwhelming experience. If there are any small things you can do to make the process easier and smoother, you will want to take them.

That’s where learning from others’ mistakes can come in. You don’t have to perfect the moving process, especially if you have moved house before. But you can plan and prepare for the journey you are about to embark on. This can be particularly helpful if you have a lot of belongings or family you are trying to move with you.

To help you on your journey, here are some of the worst mistakes you can make when moving house. Where possible, try to consider these and plan to avoid them.

#1 Not planning your moving-in day

Many people are so stressed and consumed by the legal process of moving house, that they don’t plan for the day it happens. This typically means that the day of moving is one big stressful rush, and you have to get the keys and dump all of your belongings. This is the worst thing you can do, especially if you want to clean and renovate the property first.

Take some time to plan what you will do on the day. Consider whether you need to hire a storage facility to securely hold your items while you move and renovate the property. Or maybe get some family and friends to help you move on the day. Moving day can be stressful as you can’t move until you have the keys, but then you have to be out the same day. Make sure you plan accordingly for this.

#2 Not getting help with children

If you have children, it can be a great idea to organize a playdate or babysitter for them. Moving day is stressful enough, but it can be worse when you have children to look after and supervise the whole time. It can also be dangerous. You will be packing heavy belongings into big vehicles and potentially going back and forth. You also don’t know what state the property is going to be in or what hazards might be lying around until you do an inspection. See if you can get a friend or family member to look after your children for the day.

#3 Not inspecting your new home

It is vital that you plan for an inspection, even if you do it yourself. You never know what you are going to walk into, regardless of the condition when you had a viewing. Make sure you don’t just dump all your belongings as soon as you get the keys, and instead, go around the home to check for issues and give it a deep clean first.

Moving house can be stressful. Consider these mistakes so you can plan for a better day.
