So you caught your reflection in the mirror today, and you noticed something new. You have a few fine lines that were there yesterday. The first thing to do is take a deep breath. Wrinkles are a natural and beautiful part of life, and they are a sign that you’ve done some living. That said, if you’re not fully ready to embrace them yet, there are things that you can do to soften the appearance and keep your skin looking fresh and vibrant.

Whether it’s simple self-care options or something more high tech, there’s something for everyone out there. From Botox and fillers at your local Med spa to laser resurfacing, all of these things can work wonders in smoothing things out. But don’t worry, you don’t have to go all in on advanced treatments to see a difference. Let’s take a look at some doable ways to tackle those new wrinkles.

  • Start drinking more water. A simple but overlooked way to plump up your skin is to drink more water. Dehydrated skin is often dull, tired, and wrinklier than usual. By upping your water intake, you’ll be able to restore that juicy, youthful glow you’ve been used to all these years. A hydrating moisturizer used on top with ingredients like glycerine or hyaluronic acid is a must. Think of it as giving your skin a nice tall glass of water from the outside.
  • Level up your skin care routine. If you’ve been coasting along with just a face wash and the occasional moisturizer, now is the time to level up. Retinoids are your new best friend, as they help to boost your collagen production and encourage skin cell turnover. Add in a quality vitamin C serum to brighten and protect, and don’t forget a good night cream.
  • Sunscreen. Sunscreen is not optional. UV exposure is the number one cause of premature aging, and if you want to stop new wrinkles from settling in and keep existing ones from deepening, SPF 30 or higher should be a part of your daily routine. Even if it’s cloudy, even if you’re indoors, sunscreen is what’s going to help you to fight the wrinkles.
  • Give your face a break. If you’re constantly frowning at your emails, sleeping face down or squinting at your phone, you might be helping those wrinkles along without even realising it. Try wearing blue light glasses to ease squinting and practise being mindful of your facial expressions. You could also invest in a good silk pillowcase to reduce friction while you sleep.
  • Treat yourself. Skin care is self-care, and that includes the occasional treat, like going to get a facial that you’ve been curious about or trying a luxurious sheet mask. Taking the time to pamper yourself not only refreshes your skin, but it also helps your mood. When you feel good, it shows on your face.

Wrinkles are a sign of good life. But that doesn’t mean you don’t feel self-conscious about them. If that’s how you feel, it’s time to do something about it.
