Could smart jewelry be what I need to keep my daughter safe during an emergency?
I do not consider myself an overprotective parent, I believe kids need just the right amount of freedom to learn and explore the world, but by the same token, I want my kids to be safe and unfortunately, times call for different approaches than when I was growing up and kids need to be protected from things we never thought of.
It is a jungle out there
The news is filled with stories of shootings, kidnapping, and who knows what other crazy things, that no parent want to see their kids become a part of. So, how do I let my kids grow and learn while keeping them safe?
There are the traditional stranger danger tip and having conversations about why they should stay close when we are out and about and why they should never talk to someone they don’t know.
Taking it one step forward
We are mixed home, my husband is American and I am Dominican and coming from different parts there are things that are normal in one culture and not so much in the other, but we try to find a middle point for such things.
Take sleepovers, for example, growing up I never slept in anyone’s home unless they were family, so I have a really hard time when it comes to letting my 10 years old daughter sleep in someone’s home…She is only allowed to sleep over at a handful of trusted friends and that is my middle point.
When I am not there
My daughter is part of the school patrol and they have a Washington DC trip coming up. Am I happy to send my daughter for 4 days out of the state without me? Absolutely not but this is one I need to let her do.
I have to admit that I am not exactly thrilled about this trip, so how do I prepare for peace of mind?
Technology can be a great thing and for this trip, my daughter will be wearing a very special bracelet, the invisaWear bracelet.
What makes this bracelet so special?
invisaWear utilizes technology and jewelry to create a wearable accessory that sends your location to emergency dispatchers and selected contacts during an emergency.
invisaWear smart jewelry
The invisaWear is a discrete and nice looking charm that can be easily integrated into your everyday life and the charm can be used in a variety of ways including a necklace, bracelet, choker, keychain, simply clipped to your bag or purse, on any major brand of jewelry.
Smart jewelry?
Absolutely! The invisaWear is designed to be activated with one hand, but not so easy that you or your kids would activate the alarm by mistake.
How does it work?
They use a two-way system to activate your smart jewelry charm, to prevent false alarms.
What you need to know about this smart jewelry and why would you want one
invisaWear utilizes Bluetooth technology that allows you to contact help even if your smartphone is up to 30 feet away.
As you can imagine, this smart jewelry works in combination with a free app available for iOs and Android devices.
After downloading the app, you will need to set up an account and profile in which you can add your information and add your contacts ( people to be notified in case of an emergency).
I tested it and using the test mode on the app, I was able to try it…I received a text message and a phone call within seconds of activating the charm!
The charms are powered by a coin cell battery that is guaranteed to last at least one year. When the app detects that the battery is running low, it will send you a notification to let you know so that you can purchase a replacement component (just the charm) which is discounted for $59 and will come with a brand new device.
You can not replace the battery
The reason the battery is not replaceable is that it has a very compact design that is sweat and weather resistant, and they are unable to let users safely remove it without damaging the product. However, they do guarantee one year, but it could last up to two years depending on usage!
The jewelry and charm are both cast using brass and are plated in 14K gold or palladium for silver to give it a shiny finish.
You can add different charms to your account to meet your needs.
The invisaWear smart jewelry is part of a Indiegogo campaign to fund this amazing product.
How much would it cost?
The product retails for $129 but pre-orders are discounted for $79 which are now live on Indiegogo – igg.me/at/invisawear
The charms are sweat and weather resistant so if it gets wet while washing your hands or wearing it out in the rain it shouldn’t be an issue. They don’t, however, recommend people wear them in the shower or while they’re swimming.
I love the concept, love the looks and most of all, love the peace of mind and ease of use and yes, you guessed it, my daughter will be wearing her brand new and bracelet to her Washington trip!
