I received a My Friend Cayla interactive doll for this review. I was not financially compensated for this post. My opinions are my own and not by any means influenced by any other part.
Interactive toys are always a big favorite for the Holidays and since the holidays are approaching, I want to introduce you to a doll that is expected to be a very popular hit this holiday season. Part of the genesis toys family, My Friend Cayla is a an interactive, talking doll that is about 45cm tall (about 18 inches) and is not your traditional doll, as I have mentioned, she is interactive thanks to Bluetooth technology.
Download the App
In order for your kids to fully experience Cayla’s capabilities, you will first have to download My Friend Cayla’s app which is free and available on iTunes and on the play store for Android users (be aware that the app file is large so I would recommend to download the app on a tablet over wifi as opposed to your phone).
Once you have installed the app, you will need to go to your Bluetooth settings and d scan until you find Cayla and add her. Right after that you are ready to start. You can now go to the app and fill out a questionnaire (optional) that will give the doll some information about your kids and help with the interaction, giving you a custom experience.
She will answer your questions and play games
Cayla can answer questions, play games and tell you stories. The My friend Cayla doll will need 3 AA batteries to operate (not included), You also need to have an WiFi internet connection, while you are playing with her. You will also need to launch the app so Cayla can interact with your kids.
There are a couple of different games that the kids can play with her using the app and you should know, she is a pretty good player…Be aware that in order to use any of the features on the app, Cayla has to be powered on. Besides the games, there are also the photo album and story time options, so Cayla can tell you all about the photos in her albums, or tell you a story.
The key feature however is Cayla’s ability to talk back, Cayla can have a general conversation with you. You can ask her about things she likes or does not like to do, and even general knowledge questions which is fun but here is where I encountered some problems as I would ask Cayla some questions and she will reply with something completely different or did not reply at all. This was not always the case, in some opportunities, she would reply with the appropriate answers.
I kind of equated it to SIRI in a doll. Sometimes you get what you ask for (kind of like when you ask your own child a question)… sometimes not, but its still fun.
In order to have a conversation with Cayla, you would have to select Hello on the app, then she will start off saying something of interest for her and end up with a question for you to continue with the conversation.
When Cayla is “listening”, the little heart on her pendant will light up and this is the proper time for you to talk, otherwise there will be no response. When the light is off, she is processing what you have told her, so you need to give her the time to “think”. She does however get stuck and the light will remain off for a while, so you are better off starting a new conversation which can be done by pressing the Hello option on the app.
The concept and the idea behind the doll is really neat, it does however have room for improvement and I would love to see more options in the menu, especially for the games portion (hopefully – that will just be a software / firmware upgrade).
Over all, Cayla is a cool doll that kids will love to play with and if your little one is as inquisitive as mine (or has no siblings to play with), she can spend some fun times talking to her friend Cayla.
