Renovating your home isn’t so much about what you want right now. It’s more of a long term process that lets you consider the future of your home and you’re going to want/need to use it. Within this, you can add value to your property along the way, and you can chop and change the function of your space as and when it suits you.

But if you haven’t put some foresight into your renovation plans, these benefits are going to be hard to pull off!

And that’s why you should have a renovation priority list to work from. Some projects are more important than others within your home, and you should put your budget towards them while you’ve got one.

As such, here’s a small selection of the projects that should be top of that list, if you’re looking for a little inspiration right now.

More Kitchen Space

Larger kitchens make for better kitchens. The more space you have in this room, the easier it’s going to be to use, whether you’re in there cooking, eating, hosting, or just sharing a coffee with a friend.

To achieve more kitchen space, you may need to construct an extension, knock through a wall, or simply rearrange the layout of the kitchen as it currently is. Be sure to draw up a to scale layout no matter what you decide, as this can help you see where the wasted space really lies.

Extra Lighting

Dark homes aren’t exactly comfortable ones! If you’re always complaining about the low light level within your property, this is the project to work on next.

Extra lighting – while it sounds simple on the surface – can be a deceptively complex renovation to pull off. After all, you’ve got a lot of wiring to deal with, whether you’re adding new wires, cutting back and rearranging the current electric setup, or you would simply like a couple of extra sockets to plug floor lamps into.

There’s no guarantee that the new fixtures will even be able to go where you want them fitted! Plus, it’s a dangerous project to take on if you don’t have any electrical handling qualifications. You’ll likely need to hire a professional for this work to ensure it’s carried out safely.

Exterior Upgrades

Your home’s exterior is just as in need of renovation as the interior. After all, this is the side of the home that weathers the storm. It’s where the wind and rain meet the walls and keep you protected inside. After years of doing this, without any maintenance work or upkeep, that exterior is going to look worse for wear!

So let’s focus on your curb appeal next. You can hire some curb appeal experts to plan out this project with you; they’ll be able to highlight where the problems really are and form a plan of how to tackle them.

Not only will this project make your home’s exterior stronger and better functioning, but it’ll look so much better as well. Who doesn’t love seeing a well decorated, neatly presented home when they pull up to the driveway?

Converting Unused Space

Is there any unused space in your home? Maybe an attic that’s pretty much empty, or a basement that is just a bit dark and dingy at the moment? If that’s the case, this is the renovation project that comes last on the priority list but before anything else you could do.

Converting this space to be more functional is crucial to living happily in your home. Otherwise you’re living in and around wasted rooms, and that doesn’t make sense at all!

In family homes, more usable room is always good news. So, whether you’d like to add another bedroom to your property, or you fancy a loft office to work out of, plan out your conversion once the projects above have been completed and ticked off.

What Will You Renovate Next?

Renovations are hard work. They’re costly, they can go wrong, and they’re not all going to be important projects you should do right now. Instead, think about what projects make the most sense for your home as it currently stands, as well as what your general plans are for the future.

Think about these factors in tandem; they’ll help you to use your renovation budget a lot better! And once you’re done with one project, you can tick it off the list and move on to the next one with total peace of mind.
