A few decades ago, bathrooms were considered just places where one would go to get themselves ready for bed. However, nowadays, this room is perceived as a place of complete serenity, where we go to relax all of our senses and completely give in.

Simply having the basic bathroom fixtures is no longer considered enough. Today, people are more focused on designing not just a beautiful bathroom, but a personal retreat of sorts. With that in mind, here are some practical tips that will (hopefully) help you plan and style your dream bathroom.

Determine your budget

As with any other project, you first need to determine your budget and try to stick to it no matter what. Getting carried away when choosing your bathroom furniture, fittings and fixtures is much easier than you think. However, by creating a strict budget, and trying your best to stay within that budget, you’ll be able to get on the right track if you were ever to wander off.

Know what you need and want

Before you actually start remodeling, you need to think about all the features you want to have in your bathroom. To help you stay focused, you should create a “need list” and a “wish list” beforehand and then decide what stays and what needs to go. Once you have these two lists it will be much easier to do all the work that needs to be done (shopping included) and you can simply tick off the things you’ve already done/bought. This way, you’ll have a clear picture of what has been done and what you still need to take care of.

Keep practicality in mind

Since we are such visual beings, we sometimes tend to sacrifice functionality for the aesthetics. However, when it comes to bathrooms, this can not only turn out to be really problematic but also, potentially, really dangerous. So, when choosing the elements, consider their practicality before anything else. That way, in the end, you’ll be left with a bathroom that’s not only beautiful but also safe for all its users.

Think about the amount of space you are working with

If you are not building your house from the ground up, chances are that the amount of space you have at your disposal are limited. Therefore, you need to think about all the things you wish to have in your bathroom and try to come up with an adequate layout. Every single element you wish to implement in your bathroom can vary in size and shape, so choose wisely. If you don’t have a huge bathroom, know that you’ll have to make compromises. For example, investing in a spacious high-quality bathtub is something that you should definitely go for, but a bidet can be replaced with a simple bidet toilet seat instead.

Create a pampering corner

No matter the size of your bathroom, you should always try to create a pampering area. This area doesn’t have to be particularly big, but it should hold all of your favorite products. Therefore, you can, for example, hang a nice, delicate wall shelf and put all of your favorite L’Occitane shower products, hand care products, and skin care products on display. We all deserve special care and pampering from time to time, and having all of the necessary products on display can only encourage you to pay even more attention to yourself.

Always go for high quality

This may sound silly at first, but for a real peace of mind, always choose only high-quality materials for your bathroom. Doing so will additionally put your mind at ease since high-quality materials generally last longer and are much safer for both you and the environment. Naturally, we want what’s best for us and our loved ones, so this is something you should definitely pay attention to.

Always hire professionals

Even though you might know a thing or two about plumbing and electricity, or you’ve painted a wall or two in the past, for a true dream bathroom, you should definitely hire professionals to do all the work. Real professionals will know what’s the best way to install your plumbing so that you – or rater they – can access it easily in case it requires any repairs; how to connect all the electricity so that it’s unaffected by moisture and safe to use; or what the best paint option is and how to properly apply wallpaper.

Follow your heart when decorating

Finally, once all the hard work is done, it’s time to decorate the place. Since it’s your bathroom (hence, you are the one that will be using it the most) you should decorate it according to your personal taste and preferences. If you like a particular color and wish to implement it in your bathroom design, but you’ve read somewhere that that particular color doesn’t work well in the bathroom setting – do it anyway! The only way you’ll truly be able to relax in your bathroom and achieve that peace of mind is if you fill it with all the things that make you happy, so don’t ever shy away from doing just that, no matter what other people say.

Your bathroom should be your little piece of heaven; a place where you go and wash all the worries of the day away. So, make sure it’s well-made and fill it with all the things that make you happy and help you relax because that’s the only way you’ll be able to truly enjoy it.
