When you’re a student, living conditions are pretty questionable at the best of times. You choose to wear three jumpers instead of turning the heating on, your coffee table is made of pizza boxes stacked on top of each other and you never vacuumed because you didn’t own a vacuum. But when you become a parent, this all changes. Your home becomes a haven, or at least that is the hope and intention.
You want your home to be that one place on earth you can guarantee their happiness. The problem is, not all hazards are as obvious as a midnight fireworks display. That is why we’ve pulled together a list of home maintenance tips and tricks to make sure your home is less like a student zoo and more like a utopia:
- Mount Your TV
Kids pretty much try and climb everything they can, from the stairs to your stands, which is why you need to reduce the risk of your TV toppling and mount it to the wall.
- Raise Your Frames
Nothing makes a home more homely than pictures of your family dotted around the place, but that doesn’t mean it is without issue, especially if your toddler accidentally knocks a pretty frame off a windowsill and it smashes, leaving glass everywhere. So, either raise them up high or go with plastic instead.
- No More Allergies
Another overlooked health risk is allergies, which is a big learning process for a parent. To limit the chances, try using an unscented detergent for your laundry, consider upgrading your bedding and have a well-stocked first aid kit so that you can react to anything that does arise. It is better to prevent than aid, remember that. And remember it is also better to aid than do nothing at all.
- Protect The Power
No home is without exposed socks and power strips, and no amount of education can prevent accidents from happening. It’s that whole curiosity thing that see’s kids do things like putting things in the socket holes. To prevent this from happening either hide the extensions or, better yet, buy a ton socket covers and get into the habit of using them.
- Curtain Cords
This is another one of those things that you’d never give a second thought to before kids. But the moment you have them and start thinking about every tiny child-proofing detail, things like curtain-slash-blind cords become a big issue. It’s that horrible thought that of your kid getting tangled in it. To limit the chances of this, cut the cords off, go cordless or tie them up high so that they can’t possibly be an issue.
- Strap Furniture Down
We mentioned the TV mount in the first point, but that isn’t the only time you need to use a mount. Other furniture, especially top-heavy furniture like wardrobes and chest of drawers, can also be prone to be pulled on and toppling over. It is an unnerving thought. But peace of mind can be had by strapping your furniture to the wall so that it has no way of being a hazard.
