This post is in no way saying that you need to get leaner or that this should be your focus during lockdown – however, some people like to have a goal, and for those with healthy mindsets who want to feel more confident, leaning out a little could be the way they want to do that. This post is for those people!

Below, you’ll find some healthy, sustainable suggestions that will help you to lean out and feel much fitter than when lockdown began. Take a look!

  1. Increase Your Step Count

Start with the simple goal of attempting to increase your step count. If you’re currently only doing a few thousand steps a day, start small. Don’t push yourself too much to begin with or you likely won’t stick to it. Instead, increase by a few thousand as you feel ready, perhaps each week or every few weeks.

You don’t have to endlessly increase your steps, or you’ll never be off your feet! Simply try to stick to an amount that’s manageable for you. Having a flexible goal could help. For example, maybe you want to give yourself a minimum of 8,000 a day and anything above that is a bonus. Don’t set the bar too high or expect yourself to hit huge amounts of steps like 15,000 and 20,000 a day. You may be able to do that once in a while, but it’s unlikely going to be something you can stick to in the long term.

  1. Track Your Macros

Tracking macros can seem complicated, but there are so many resources out there that could help you to do it. You’re essentially making sure you’re getting enough protein, carbs, and fats to reach your goals. It’s a more effective way of calorie counting and reaching your goals, as you ensure your body is getting what it needs. Take your time with this. You could even start by simply focusing on increasing your protein and go from there.

  1. Do Some Circuits

A few circuits each day could be a great way of getting your heart rate up and burning some extra calories, as well as strengthening your muscles and giving yourself a cognitive boost. This can be the perfect way to start the day, as you’ll be more likely to stay active for the remainder of the day and be in a better mood.

3. Buy Some Weights

Weights are expensive, but at this rate, the gyms aren’t going to open again for a long time. If you can invest in some weights, then you can begin to incorporate some barbell compound exercises into your workout and these exercises will work multiple muscles in different parts of your body. Compound exercises are great for burning fat, which in turn will help you to get leaner.

  1. Take This Time To Focus On The Basics

You may not be able to buy weights, and that’s fine, too. Instead, put a focus on the basics and really concentrate on your form. Form overweight, every time! You can also slow down the movements and work on other ways to make them harder if they start to get easy.

  1. Let Go Of Unrealistic Goals And Expectations

Let go of your unrealistic goals and you’ll also let go of stress and pressure. If you simply exercise to maintain your mental health right now, that’s great. You don’t need to make a lot of progress while we’re all going through a pandemic. Cut yourself some slack. The way you look isn’t the be-all and end all!

  1. Continue Prepping Your Meals

Meal prep can help to give you the energy you need for the day ahead. You may not have work, but continue prepping your meals as if you do anyway. You’ll be able to stay in a good routine this way, and you’ll ensure you’re getting plenty of protein and vegetables.

  1. Practice Great Sleep Hygiene

Your quality of sleep can have a huge impact on how much progress you make. Not only that, but it’ll also impact how much energy you have and even your appetite. Many people focus on exercise and what they are eating but fail to focus on improving their sleep. If you can do this during the lockdown, you’ll be in great habits for when everything is back to normal!

  1. Stay Hydrated

If you’re exercising, you should consume 2-3 liters of water per day to stay hydrated and energized. Drinking plenty of water has also been linked with fat loss, so it’s a must in any routine.
