Tummy Time
Placing your baby on her or his stomach (Only when they are awake and supervised) is fundamental for your babies muscle development, especially the neck and shoulders. Tummy time is also a great way to promote your baby’s motor skills and, let’s not forget, that tummy time can also help prevent positional plagiocephaly (flat spots in the back of the baby’s head).
The right age to start?
There are many different opinions when the best time to start your little bundle of joy with the tummy time, but most experts will agree that babies should start with 20 to 30 minutes when he is 3 to 4 months old.
All babies are different
As an individual, your baby will have specific needs that you will have to observe in order to make tummy time enjoyable. Please note that it is never a good idea to start with tummy time right after feeding or if your baby is fussy or uncomfortable.
Love or hate it
Some babies love the tummy time and others do not so make sure to make tummy time a fun time. Babies love textures and colors but it is not until they turn 5 months old can they really see colors other than black and white along with some shades of gray. It is a good idea to look for a baby mat that has different colors so they grow with your baby and can be enjoyed by your little one once he or she is able to appreciate the colors.
Getting the right activity gym/ mat for your baby
There are tons of play mats on the market that would take you through the tummy and play time but of course, they are not all the same and you should take a close look at what they offer before you get a mat for your little one. Yookidoo offers a variety of baby mats and activity gyms and I especially like their Gymotion Activity Playland. The brand did a great job developing this 3- in 1 award-winning activity gym.
