Ever since my daughter could talk, she has requested a puppy for Christmas, and her birthdays were no different. But because we were living in a condo with probably 85% of the floor covered by carpet, I always refused to bring home a puppy. We did, however, agree to get a puppy once we moved to a house. Four months ago, we moved to our new home, and as promised, the kids got a puppy as an early Christmas present.

I started to prepare to bring the new puppy home about a month before its arrival, and I am glad I did. There is a lot to take into consideration when you bring home a puppy, and I did a good amount of research on what things to use for my little fur baby. A bed, a crate, a water bowl, a food bowl, pee pads, a brush, treats—yes, there is a lot of things to think about when you have a new four-legged member of the family. Because I consider our puppy a member of the family, I took this seriously and spent quite some time looking for all the things the puppy needed.

The food, treats, and supplements were some of my biggest concerns. One of the things I looked into was giving the dog hemp oil. Hemp use in different beauty and health products is growing as I type, and there seems to be a lot of benefits for dogs using this oil as well.

First off, let’s clarify that hemp is a variety of cannabis, but unlike its cousin, hemp has less than 1% THC, and it is often used in the making of many different products. The seeds and flowers are commonly used in the making of organic body products and even in health foods. The use of hemp has extended to making products for not only humans but also our four-legged friends.

Why I Considered Giving My Dog Hemp

This ancient plant is very versatile, and many brands make great clothing products from hemp. But equally important is the use of its oil.

Hemp seed oil contains the perfect ratio of Omega-6 (linoleic acid) to Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) fatty acids. These acids are essential fatty acids that cannot be produced by your dog, so he needs to get these through his diet.

Benefits

Hemp is said to fight cancer, reduce joint pain, and improve dogs’ skin and coat, so I was very interested in adding hemp to my fur baby’s diet. Did I mention that lots of people also swear by it when it comes to reducing dog anxiety?

Travel Time with the Puppy

Lots of dogs suffer from travel anxiety just like some people do, and having the option to help your fur baby with the process is priceless.
