Up to about a year ago, I have never heard about ketosis and certainly had no idea what the keto diet was. If I have to be honest, I was not so sure I understood the concept back then, and I am sure there are many of you out there wanting more information to see if this hype diet is right for you.

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. But how does ketosis occur? Is quite simple, really. When the body does not have enough glucose (sugar) for energy, it starts to burn the stored fats instead, resulting in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body.

Some people boost ketosis by following a diet called the ketogenic or low-carb diet.

Why Go Low Carb

The main purpose of carbohydrates in the diet is to provide the body with energy. Most carbs get broken down or transformed into glucose, which can be used as energy.

There are three main types of dietary carbohydrates: sugars such as fruits, milk, and yogurt; starches such as bread and pasta; and fiber such as nuts and seeds. The body breaks these carbs down into simple sugars. That glucose can either be used to fuel the body or be stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.

The keto diet has become “the diet,” and it is followed by many famous people and non-famous people like yours truly. The goal of the keto diet is to try and burn unwanted fat by making your body to depend on fat for energy rather than on carbs.

As with any diet, it is always recommended to consult with your doctor and follow some parameters to keep your ketones within the normal range and avoid health issues.

The Skinny

Ketosis happens when the body does not have enough access to its primary fuel source: glucose. You could say that ketosis is when the fat stored in your body is broken down to produce energy, which also produces ketones, a type of acid.

When to Be Careful

As the ketone levels rise, the acidity of the blood also increases, which can lead to a serious condition known as ketoacidosis, a condition that can prove fatal. However, some people see keto as a lifestyle instead of a diet and are quite successful following the parameters within the keto community. There are many Facebook groups for keto fans and tons of tips, plans, and supplements to help you achieve a ketosis state.

What do you say—are you ready to give up carbs?
